(01) The story
Why Urban Works exists.
Before Urban Works, I spent a couple of years on an airport tarmac coordinating aircraft turnarounds. A plane lands and you have a fixed window. Cleaners, refuellers, caterers, engineers and baggage crews all arrive at once, and almost none of them work in the same team. The job isn’t about doing any one of those things — it’s making six separate crews land as one operation, on time, every time.
Then I started renting in Melbourne, and I watched that same job get done badly over and over. A blocked drain meant three phone calls and two no-shows. An end-of-lease clean meant a Facebook group, a stranger, and a lot of hoping. Every tradesperson I met was good at their trade. Not one of them was responsible for the whole thing.
Everyone was a phone number. Nobody was accountable for the outcome.
The same idea, pointed at buildings
Urban Works is that model applied to property. You tell us what needs doing. We scope it, quote it as one fixed number, and send vetted, insured people who have done the job before. Then we check it was actually done properly — because that part is the job, not a courtesy.
You get one contact for cleaning, maintenance and handyman work. One quote. One person to call when something isn’t right.
Melbourne only, on purpose
We work across metropolitan Melbourne and nowhere else yet. I’d rather be genuinely good across one city than stretched thin across five. If you’re outside our area, tell us anyway — we keep a waitlist by state and we’ll come to you when we can do it properly.
What we won’t do
We don’t quote by the hour and let it drift. We don’t hand you a contractor’s number and disappear. And we don’t take on work we can’t stand behind — if we’re not the right people for a job, we’ll say so rather than learn on your property.
